Why You Should Be Blogging

26 Jan

At PMC, we deal with blogs of all shapes, sizes, and topics on a daily basis. Some are very reputable, while some are just getting off the ground. That being said, there is room on the Internet for any breed of writer to put out a blog that deserves to be read. Some may ask, however, “Why should I be blogging?” The answer, as it turns out, is fairly multifaceted. We will lay out the reasons here.

It’s therapeutic.
When you were young, let’s say a teen in middle school, if you had issues with the school bully or a guy/girl you were madly in love with, a guidance counselor’s general suggestion would be to start a journal or diary. In this diary, you would write down every day events, thoughts, and anything else that came to mind. The purpose of this is to have it all down on paper, which would allow you to straighten out your thoughts and give you the ability to go back and reflect on what you had written. Journal writing is an endlessly therapeutic and relaxing activity that has helped many people come to terms with events in their lives, that they may have had trouble dealing with. Blogs are the 21st century version of the stereotypical diary. You can jot down your thoughts, feelings, and emotions onto your blog and have them their to reflect back on whenever you so choose. The 21st century bonus to blog writing this way is that you can share these thoughts and feelings with the world. Through the Internet’s blog networks, you can find people who are going through the same things you are going through, and communicate with them in an even more therapeutic manner. If you are going through a hard time in your life, or just want to get your thoughts out there, blogging is the perfect outlet for you.

Get your name out there.
Blogs are a hugely efficient and easy way to get your name out on the Internet. You may want to do this for several reasons. Maybe you have started a small business and want to share your product and service with the world. Where do you go if you are on a small marketing budget? Blogs. Blog about what your business does, will do, or could be doing, and see what people think. It makes it easy to receive feedback from potential clients and consumers, and gives you the ability to gauge how you need to adjust or change your business to suit their needs. If you’re an independent musician, blogging makes it easy to share your music with an online community, as well as promote your shows and events. You can blog about other musicians and collaborate with them, which is a great way to spark word of mouth to get people to know who you are. Through ease of use and the fact that 99.9% of blogs are free when they are used at their basic levels, it is a no-brainer that you should be using this outlet to share your name with the world.

Beat bordom.
What do you do on a rainy day when nothing is going on? Do you spend your time in front of a television screen playing Madden or Call of Duty (though I cannot lie, these are excellent activities)? Why not spend your time putting out any type of content on a blog? By doing this, you are stimulating your mind in such a way that it promotes cognitive growth and expansion, much like writing a term paper in school. It is one thing to be stimulated by killing insurgents in a video game, while attempting to be the match’s top player, and is completely another thing to write about how much you hate your iPhone. Even something so simple as this will stimulate your mind in positive and constructive ways. So think twice before picking up that PS3 controller, and ask yourself what you want to accomplish on that rainy day.

The bottom line is that blogging is a rapidly growing trend on the Internet, and there has to be some sort of reason for that. Whether it is reasons that have been mentioned or something else, give it a try, and see how you can affect your readers.
