Social Media Spotlight: Jay-O Productions

15 Jun

Jay-O Productions companyOn this week’s installment of Social Media Spotlight, we bring to you Jay-O Productions, a musical production company that creates tempos, tunes and beats for artists to record their lyrics onto. Started in 2008, Jay-O Productions has put out several releases to the public, allowing anyone to listen to their music. They have also posted beat-making videos on their YouTube channel, which is very innovative and gives you a personal feel into the activities of this production company. We had the pleasure to speak with the CEO and Founder of Jay-O Productions, Jason Osborne, about their social media strategies. Here is what he had to say:

What social media platforms do you currently use?

J: I currently use Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. There is a good chance I have an account on any media outlet that’s popular.

What value, if any, does social media provide to your business?

J: It’s a huge outlet to reach fans and followers. If anyone wants to hear, see or learn about my music or what I do, social media grants me that exposure. It is also great to get real time feedback from my fans about a particular song or beat that I may be working on.

Which social media platform works best for your business?

J: Right now I’d say YouTube, and right behind that is Twitter. In the entertainment industry, people want to see the talent not just hear it. YouTube allows that to happen. Twitter is great for networking. I have met and collaborated with a lot of different artists and other producers just because we happen to follow each other on Twitter. It allows for a more direct approach to reach fans as well.

How has social media impacted your business in terms of ROI and sales?

J: Well it allows my product to be immediately available to the consumer. My goal is to increase my exposure, and having all these outlets to post my music allows for a much larger audience. If you want my product you can check my website, follow me on Twitter, or check my YouTube, and it’s all there. All you have to do is email me which track you want and it’s sent immediately.

Do you have any advice for companies who are on the fence about social media?

J: Jump on the bandwagon! If your business doesn’t have at least a Facebook and/or a Twitter page, you’re missing out big time. These days everyone is plugged into something, and businesses that don’t use social media outlets are at a really big disadvantage in terms of exposure and communication. If your competitor isn’t using social media, this may be your edge in the industry.

Is there any social media strategy that you would like to improve or do differently?

J: I always want more in numbers. As far as any of the social media outlets I use, the more followers and likes I get will result in more hits on my YouTube channel. The amount of exposure you receive is based on who sees or hears your music, so the more people the better. I continuously strive to increase my numbers and to increase my fan base and exposure to get my music to as many people as possible.

The music industry is a brutal one to be a part of. Your career could go from nothing to star, back down to a Nobody in a matter of months. Not only is making great and original music harder than before, winning the crowd over is a task in itself. Jason clearly understands the advantages behind using an array of social media sites like Twitter and YouTube to gain a loyal following. Whether you are into oldies, classic rock or modern day blues, anyone can appreciate the genius behind creating your own tunes. Social media may save the music industry. With illegal downloading running wild these days, genuine fans through social media networking will be more inclined to buy and support the band they engage with.

Agreed. Using social media sites for any business shows the authenticity and personality of that company or, in this case, artist. It is the best communication channel to make long-lasting connections with fans and/or consumers because it provokes engagement and conversation. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!
