Sam Bridge Nursery is a full service, year-round, garden center that provides customers with a large selection of top quality plants for the home and garden. Not only do they supply plants, they also offer landscape design, installation, and Sam Bridge Premier Garden Care. Sam Bridge Nursery is well known within their industry and has been providing top quality products for over 80 years. We had the pleasure to speak with the manager of sales and marketing for Sam Bridge Nursery, Maggie Bridge, about their social media campaign, and here is what she had to say:

What social media platforms do you currently use?

M: Right now we use Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. We also have pages on sites like Yelp, Hot Frog, etc. 

What value, if any, does social media provide to your business?

M: Social media is great because it enables us to provide immediate information to our customers. We upload seasonal photos to give people a taste of what’s available. We also offer the ‘Garden Tip of the Day’ a few times a week via Facebook and Twitter. This is great because it gets people going on the things that they should be doing in their gardens or landscape before it’s too late. Customers are able to ask us great questions. For instance, someone will upload a photo and ask us “What is this?” We are then able to identify their plant and let them know if it’s in stock. Some of our fans have also begun to upload their own photos of plants they have bought from us. They’re able to show us how well the plants are doing once they get them home. We also like to promote our in-store events and special promotions via social media (in addition to traditional forms of marketing). We get customers who will tell us, “I came in today because I read about this on Facebook.”

Which social media platform works best for your business?

M: Right now, the best social media platform for us would be Facebook. So far it is my favorite when it comes to connecting with our customers. Facebook’s speed and ease of use is a definite plus. As far as connecting with other businesses and organizations, I’d have to say Twitter works best. In my experience with our industry, it seems that Twitter is becoming mostly business to business connections while Facebook is more about the individual.

How has social media impacted your business in terms of ROI and sales?

M: So far it has only impacted us positively. The only cost associated with it is paying someone to keep up with it. Once it is set up, it only takes a few minutes to update. The benefits far outweigh the risks. One of the best things social media can do for you is to keep your name out there.  

Do you have any advice for companies who are on the fence about social media?

M: What are you waiting for?! With the amount of people who use social media today, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. It is also a great way to connect with new customers. Our customers are primarily part of the baby boomer generation. Now that Gen X is buying houses they too are beginning to garden. But, how do you reach Gen Y (or sometimes referred to as the Millennial) and the large chunk of Gen X who are not your customers yet? The answer: social media. It is incredibly fast, and when combined with traditional marketing techniques, it can be very successful.

Is there any social media strategy that you would like to improve or do differently?

M: I would love to expand our YouTube channel. Slowly but surely we are moving more towards video, and eventually I’d love to have lots of different tutorials to help our customers.

We always love to see how different industries use social media to help better their business and brand community online. When you visit their different social networks, you can see that Sam Bridge Nursery does an excellent job in engaging their loyal consumers, as well as offering helpful advice and tips to those who may be a first time customer.
